Transfer chatter tends to gather pace whenever Liverpool’s recruitment team are linked with an attacking player, and Anthony Gordon has now delivered a firm response to the latest round of rumours. The Newcastle United winger reacted strongly after fresh claims suggested the Premier League champions remained keen on bringing him to Anfield, reportedly ahead of interest from other top clubs.
Speaking after Newcastle United’s emphatic 6-1 win over Qarabag, in which he scored four times, Gordon brushed aside the noise. When he was asked about the transfer rumours which mentioned Liverpool, the winger replied, via Chronicle Live: “About me? I haven’t seen them. What are they saying?
“It’s the same old, same old. I think they just pick names out of a hat. They do! I haven’t heard anything; they might want to tell me before they tell you [the media]. I have gone through enough transfer stuff now to know that it is all a load of rubbish.”
Those words offered a clear message, the 24-year-old remains focused on Newcastle United despite ongoing speculation about a potential return to his native Merseyside.
Gordon’s performance in Azerbaijan underlined why Newcastle United value him so highly. His four goals pushed him into double figures for the current Champions League campaign, highlighting a European scoring run that has outshone his domestic numbers so far this season.
While his Premier League tally stands at three goals from 20 appearances, context matters. Penalties account for half of his European total, yet his pace and directness continue to make him one of Newcastle United’s most dangerous attacking outlets. The Magpies lifted the Carabao Cup last year, and Gordon’s role in that squad has reinforced his importance to the club’s long term plans.
With Newcastle United currently sitting mid table, questions about future ambitions inevitably surface. Qualification for European football could shape how firmly they hold on to key players such as Anthony Gordon, especially with interest from Liverpool never too far away.

Since Arne Slot guided Liverpool to the Premier League title in 2024-25, the club’s recruitment strategy has focused on versatility and homegrown depth. Anthony Gordon’s ability to operate across the frontline ticks several boxes for a squad that continues to evolve under Slot’s leadership.
Liverpool’s scouting department are known to monitor players over long periods rather than acting on impulse. Gordon’s previous connection with the club, having been released from their academy as a youngster, adds a narrative layer that fuels speculation. Even so, there is little sign of an imminent approach, particularly after the winger’s public dismissal of the rumours.
From a tactical viewpoint, Liverpool already possess significant attacking options, which means any move would likely depend on departures or a clear strategic need rather than short term hype.
For now, the focus remains on Newcastle United and Gordon’s continued development on Tyneside. His recent comments suggest contentment with his current situation, and the club would almost certainly demand a substantial fee for a player entering his prime years.
Transfer stories rarely disappear completely in elite football, especially when Liverpool are involved. Circumstances change quickly, form fluctuates, and opportunities emerge when least expected. Yet Gordon’s words carry weight, signalling that talk of a move may be premature at this stage.
As the season unfolds, Liverpool supporters and Newcastle United fans alike will keep an eye on developments, knowing that performances on the pitch often dictate what happens next in the transfer market.
