The Nigerian hands Celtic a last-gasp victory against Kilmarnock
Kelechi Iheanacho / Celtic 2-1 Kilmarnock / Premiership
Kelechi Iheanacho struck the winning goal on his debut for Celtic this Sunday. The Nigerian international converted a stoppage-time penalty to secure a 2-1 victory for the Scottish champions against Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.
Iheanacho signed for Celtic on September 3, 2025, following a mixed spell at Sevilla and a loan stint at Middlesbrough. On Sunday, September 14, the former Leicester striker made a dream start in the iconic green and white shirt. Coming off the bench in the 70th minute to replace Daizen Maeda, the 28-year-old Nigerian seized his moment at the perfect time.
When referee John Beaton pointed to the spot in stoppage time, Iheanacho stepped up calmly and sent the opposing goalkeeper the wrong way, unleashing wild celebrations among the Celtic faithful. With the match seemingly destined for a draw, Kelechi Iheanacho found the back of the net against Kilmarnock, handing his new club a dramatic victory.
The Nigerian striker made no attempt to hide his joy after netting a flawless debut goal.
"I feel really, really good. It was the last kick of the game, and I got to take it, so I'm really happy. I'm grateful for the opportunity, and I could see the fans’ reaction after the goal. It was a really important goal, so I'm happy. It's a fantastic feeling, but at the same time, there's a lot of pressure with a penalty like that. I kept my cool and we got the three points today, which is massive," Kelechi shared.
