Ahead of the Bundesliga season opener, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany talks squad depth, pre-season preparations, and their opponents, RB Leipzig.
Kompany was immediately asked about the squad, with reports suggesting that the current champions are low on reinforcements.
“We have four experienced players and two talented youngsters in attack. We also have Rapha Guerreiro and Tom Bischof, who can play in an attacking role. Manuel Neuer won’t be playing up front (laughs). I don’t like playing in a sacrificial role. No matter what happens, we want to attack. We have a lot of people working on transfers. My job is to make sure we win tomorrow.”
Max Eberl, who was sitting alongside Kompany for the press conference, also gave his thoughts:
“We have a job to do and we’ll get it done. We want to have a squad that’s competitive. We don’t want to follow any hype, we want to pursue development. Our interest is in being able to nurture young players in the right environment. We’re still trying to sign a player on loan for up front.”
Perhaps the biggest question on the squad was Kompany being asked if he was happy with the current squad:
“The most important game so far was against Stuttgart. We took a step in the right direction there. We have to win tomorrow’s game too, then we can say we’ve made a good start. It’s true that pre-season has not been ideal. But then you have to be mentally prepared. What we’ve shown so far is that we’re absolutely ready to fight. We want to draw strength from this phase too.”
With Bayern’s participation in the Club World Cup this summer, the players have had little time to rest before getting straight back into competitive football again.
Kompany and Eberl were both asked on the club’s preparations both on and off the pitch:
Kompany: “When you have little time to prepare, it’s normal for the players to suffer from cramps. It was a final against strong opponents. But we’re ready mentally, which is important, and we’re hungry. It’s about getting better, and we’re highly motivated.” Eberl: “We’ve had some great games and good results. It’s fantastic that, as FC Bayern, we won the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. We’ve secured the trophy. We need to clear our heads. Tomorrow we face our next test against very strong opponents.”
It’s a fantastic game to kickstart this season’s Bundesliga. Kompany was asked about his thoughts on RB Leipzig:
“There’s greater variability. They have a new coach and quite a new structure. They’ve signed some talented players and have a strong squad. Last season didn’t go too well. Leipzig are certainly among our rivals. We have to take the game very seriously. They have wingers who are good in one-on-one situations and players like Xavi Simons in the number 10 role. They’re strong going forward. But we’re at the Allianz Arena and are aiming to put in a good performance for the fans.”
Eberl was then asked about the status of the Bundesliga, considering the financial situation in comparison to the likes of the Premier League and even Saudi Arabia.
“The status of the Bundesliga has not worsened. The financial possibilities are greater in the Premier League or even in Saudi Arabia. We have to work with what we have. The budget is also a very important issue. Money plays a big role in football, of course.”
And that concludes the season’s first pre-match press conference. By tomorrow evening, we’ll know a lot more about two clubs that will be expected to be competing at the top end of the table this season.
