UEFA confirmed that Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni has been banned for six matches for discriminatory conduct. The case stems from the Champions League play-off first leg against Real Madrid and a homophobic insult aimed at Vinícius Júnior.

Three matches are suspended for two years. One game has already been served in the second leg at the Bernabéu.

With Benfica not returning to European competition this season, parts of the ban could be served with Argentina. If selected for the 2026 World Cup, the 20-year-old would miss two matches there.

If he is not called up, those games will carry over to next season’s European competitions with Benfica. The impact could run into 2026/27 depending on his international situation.

An initial racism allegation was not confirmed. Prestianni later acknowledged using homophobic language, and Benfica have been notified of the decision.
