Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni took to Instagram after the 2-1 loss to Flamengo in the Troféu do Algarve, a post interpreted as a response to taunts from some Flamengo supporters who called him a racist during the match. According to Glorioso 1904, the message followed sustained provocation.
He entered in the first half after Jaden Umeh was injured, and his duel with Emerson Royal quickly turned heated. Prestianni was loudly booed by Flamengo fans at Estádio Algarve, a reaction tied to last season’s row with Vinícius Júnior.
In his reflection, he suggested that refusing to answer provocation can show character, that some arguments only aim to make you lose your composure and self-respect, and that elegance lies in not descending to any level.
That dispute dates back to the Champions League, when Vinícius initially accused the Benfica player of racist insults. The case concluded with no evidence to support the allegation.
Even so, the governing body handed Prestianni a six-match suspension, with three games suspended, for homophobic conduct. He has always denied racist behaviour, saying he directed the term “maricas” at the Real Madrid forward during the game.
