Portsmouth and Sheffield Wed. at Fratton Park this Saturday in round six of the Championship.
The home side are currently ninth in the table with eight points, while the Owls find themselves struggling at the other end in 23rd, having collected just a single point so far this season.
The sides’ most recent encounter finished level, with a 1-1 draw.
Freddie Webb (PompeyNewsNow) (PO4cast): Pride filled the away end of St Marys during the South Coast Derby. Pompey’s 0-0 draw against Southampton, which could have been three points with more clinical finishing, continues a solid start to the season.
Regan Poole and Conor Shaughnessy remain rocks at the back. John Swift and Andre Dozzell stabilise the Blues midfield with defensive solidity and progressive passing, with the front four having high levels of quality.
Many would think Saturday’s match against a financially cripped Sheffield Wednesday - thanks to Dejphon Chansiri - will be a walkover because of this, but it’s not that simple. If the Owls set up in a strong back-five and hit them on the counter, they’ll cause problems.
Pompey lost to relegated Plymouth last season in a similar fashion, and with the team scoring under their collective expected goals - four goals to 6.4 xG - this could continue. John Mousinho will be looking to avoid this banana skin and secure another three points.
Prediction: 2-1
James Mappin (The WTID Podcast): Once again matters off the pitch dominate the football club at the moment. We're desperately in need of change at the top as the owner, Dejphon Chansiri, just runs us into the ground. We've had no investment, no new signings, and players of any worth or value have either left or sold. It's no surprise that we find ourselves languishing down in 23rd at the moment.
Heading into this game we know it's going to be tough. On paper our starting XI isn't 'too bad' but that's about it. We don't have any strength in depth and we've already picked up seven injuries which make the job 10x harder.
Fratton Park has been a happy hunting ground in the past but I can't see us coming away with three points tomorrow. To be honest I can't even see us getting a goal.
My starting XI isn't what I think will happen but more what I want to happen. Both George Brown and Ernie Weaver looked good against Leeds and Grimsby in the cup. Both young lads who I feel deserve a chance. I don't think it'll come but there's no harm in trying.
It sounds like I'm being negative but this is the honest truth as to where we are. The players are trying. The manger is trying. We as fans are trying to get behind the team. But ultimately we all know that the reason why we are where we are is all down to one individual. DEJPHON CHANSIRI. GET OUT OF OUR CLUB.
