Bayern Munich travel to the French capital to face holders Paris Saint-Germain on Matchday four of the Champions League. Vincent Kompany’s side, along with PSG, are two of the favourites for this season’s competition – and have shown why so far – separated in the table by just one goal scored in favour of the Parisien side.
Bayern are in red-hot form this season, having won their opening 15 fixtures on the spin. The record champions are therefore rightly full of confidence. However, their opponents tomorrow night are a different kettle of fish compared to what they’ve faced so far this campaign.
Just five months ago, this PSG team made European football sit up and take notice, dismantling Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final. They haven’t had it all their own way in domestic competition, though, having endured their fair share of injuries. They now find themselves back at the summit of Ligue 1, two points clear of Marseille and Lens.
The Parisiens have been frighteningly good going forward over the last 12 months or so, but they will be without star man Désiré Doué for the visit of the Rekordmeister. Not that his replacement is any less of a threat, with Bradley Barcola poised to take the reins. Also missing for PSG will be €63m signing Ilya Zabarnyi, after the Ukrainian was dismissed in the 7-2 victory at Bayer Leverkusen last time out.
Bayern, meanwhile, opted to rest most of their big guns for their own win over die Werkself at the weekend. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz all started on the bench and were introduced around the hour mark.
PSG were the last team to beat Bayern, running out 2-0 victors at the quarter-final stage of this past summer’s Club World Cup.
This one has all the ingredients to be a classic. What happens when an immovable object meets an unstoppable force? We’ll find out on Tuesday night.
Paris Saint-Germain: Lucas Chevalier – Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes – João Neves, Vitinha, Fabián Ruiz – Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola, Ousmane Dembélé.
Bayern Munich: Manuel Neuer – Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Raphaël Guerreiro – Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović – Michael Olise, Lennart Karl, Luis Díaz – Harry Kane.
