Paris Saint-Germain’s injury woes don’t appear to be terribly concerning to their manager. Luis Enrique has had to contend with plenty of players out of the lineup this season, many of whom were key to their success last season.
Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé (28) missed a lot of time this season through injury, Desiré Doué (20) has had his share of hamstring issues, Nuno Mendes (23) is dealing with knee problems and Achraf Hakimi (27), arguably their most valuable all-around player, is out for the foreseeable future with an ankle sprain. Bradley Barcola (23) also spent some time on the PSG sidelines this season through injury.
With the winter transfer window approaching and many PSG players on the mend, speculation has arisen that the reigning UEFA Champions League winners may be aggressive on the market this time around.
“We’re always open [to doing things] in the transfer market,” said Luis Enrique. At the same time, he adds, “It is a possibility but not an emergency or a concern.” The situation they are currently in is one their coach is relishing. “I am very motivated because I like it when it is difficult,” said the PSG manager.
Despite all the knocks and walking wounded, Luis Enrique has managed to keep this team consistent and winning often in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. The Spaniard evidently loves a challenge, and taking this team to more trophies without so many stars will add another feather in his cap.
Meanwhile, if he could guide them to a second successive Champions League crown, if he could succeed in that mission, he’d collect his third title as a manager in that competition. That would put him in a tie for the second-most all-time alongside Zinedine Zidane, Bob Paisley and Pep Guardiola.
