Heavyweight showdown between in-form European giants headlines the round of 16

Liverpool travel to face Paris Saint-Germain this week in the first leg of their massive Champions League last-16 tie.

Finishing top of the new-look league phase in Europe’s significantly revamped elite club competition with seven wins and only one defeat from their eight matches did not spare the Reds from a tough first knockout assignment, with underperforming PSG having only managed a 15th-place finish before thrashing French rivals Brest 10-0 on aggregate in a thoroughly one-sided play-off tie that included a 7-0 win in the second leg.

They were subsequently drawn against Arne Slot’s side instead of Barcelona, who ended up paired with Benfica after the latter overcame Monaco. It is a heavyweight meeting between two in-form giants of the European game, both of whom appear firmly on track to win domestic league titles this season.

Liverpool have a commanding 13-point lead over faltering rivals Arsenal at the Premier League summit with just 10 matches left to play this term as they also prepare to contest the Carabao Cup final this month, while undefeated reigning champions PSG’s advantage at the top of Ligue 1 is the same having already won the Trophee des Champions and advanced to the Coupe de France semi-finals under Luis Enrique.

Date, kick-off time and venue

PSG vs Liverpool is scheduled for an 8pm GMT kick-off on Wednesday March 5, 2025.

The match will take place at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

PSG vs Liverpool team news

PSG received a boost last week with teenage midfield star Warren Zaïre-Emery resuming training following an ankle issue that had kept him out since late January and coming off the bench in Saturday’s 4-1 home win over Lille in Ligue 1.

Enrique was able to rotate between last week’s 7-0 demolition of fourth-tier minnows Stade Briochin in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France and the win over Lille, with an otherwise clean bill of health at present.

Liverpool will definitely remain without defenders Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, who are both currently sidelined with hamstring injuries.

Bradley is expected to miss a few weeks of action after being injured as substitute for Trent Alexander-Arnold in the draw at Aston Villa last month, while Gomez is expected to be out for most of the rest of the season after surgery on a setback that happened just 10 minutes into his comeback from a previous hamstring injury - one that ruled him out for the whole of December - in the shock FA Cup loss at Plymouth.

Slot is not believed to be battling any new injury concerns, with Liverpool’s FA Cup exit meaning they had a clear weekend and have not played since winning 2-0 at home to Newcastle last Wednesday. Tyler Morton is unavailable after shoulder surgery, while teenage defender Amara Nallo is suspended after being sent off in the final match of the league phase - a 3-2 loss away at PSV Eindhoven in January in which Liverpool rested their key players with progress already guaranteed.

With a nod to the showdowns between respective domestic rivals Real Madrid and Atletico and Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, this is the standout tie of the last 16 as the respective champions elect of France and England go head to head.

Both teams are in serious form and with ambitions of completing respective trophy trebles this season with league titles all but sewn up - a fourth in a row in PSG’s case - and deep progress in domestic cups, while PSG also have a domestic Super Cup to their name.

They would each love to marry that success at home with glory on the continent, with six-time winners Liverpool having not been beyond this stage of the Champions League since losing the 2021/22 final to Real Madrid in Paris and PSG still chasing that elusive first success in the competition after another semi-final exit last term at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

We’re backing Liverpool to earn a somewhat cagey draw on the road that leaves them as favourites to finish off the tie back at Anfield next week.

Draw, 1-1.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

These two sides have remarkably only met twice before, in the group stage of the 2018/19 Champions League. Liverpool won 3-2 at Anfield thanks to Roberto Firmino’s dramatic stoppage-time goal, before losing 2-1 in Paris.
