PSG head to Toulouse on Friday at 20:45 with a streamlined squad for Europe that has left fringe players seeking Ligue 1 minutes. According to L'Équipe, rotation has been pared back in the Champions League and, injuries aside, Wednesday’s quarter-final first leg XI against Liverpool looks settled.
Before the break, Luis Enrique made clear this was not the moment to experiment, preferring certainties and backing those who have proved their level. Kang-in Lee has 80 minutes across four cameos over the Monaco and Chelsea ties, Gonçalo Ramos only 35 in three outings, while Lucas Chevalier, Lucas Beraldo and Ibrahim Mbaye have slipped from view.
For Chevalier, overtaken by Matveï Safonov, a World Cup spot from 11 June to 19 July in the United States, Mexico and Canada looks precarious. He is in year one of a five-year contract at PSG and his level is not being questioned internally.
Ligue 1 offers limited consolation. Unlike last season’s clear split, a league side and a European side feel less defined with Lens second, one point back but with a game more, and only Lee starting three of the past four league matches as others make do with scraps.
Inside the club, the Désiré Doué precedent is cited to show hierarchies can shift, after his two convincing cameos against Liverpool last season pushed him towards a starter’s status. Dissatisfaction among substitutes is seen as healthy so long as they deliver when called, otherwise exits will be facilitated if the club are not financially harmed.
The Toulouse game arrives five days before Europe, a chance to test readiness and soothe frustrations. Enrique has stressed that trophies require everyone and highlighted Lucas Hernandez, Lee, Beraldo and Ramos as players who are always ready.
