The UEFA Champions League knockout stages are upon us, and Arsenal travel to the Philips Stadion to face PSV in what promises to be a fascinating last-16 tie. Mikel Arteta’s side find themselves in a season-defining clash, with the Premier League title slipping out of reach. This competition now stands as their best shot at silverware, but overcoming the Dutch giants will be no easy task.
PSV, having finished 14th in the league phase, earned their place in the last 16 after a gritty win over Juventus in the knockout round play-off. Arsenal, on the other hand, progressed automatically, courtesy of their strong group-stage performance. Whoever emerges victorious from this encounter will go on to face either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals—a daunting challenge in itself.

Arsenal’s attacking options are severely depleted heading into this fixture. Both Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli remain sidelined with hamstring injuries, while Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz have been ruled out for the season. This leaves Arteta with limited firepower, and it remains to be seen how he will adjust his frontline.
Mikel Merino could continue in attack unless Raheem Sterling is drafted into the starting XI. On the defensive front, Ben White is back in contention for his first start since November. However, Jurrien Timber, Riccardo Calafiori, and Myles Lewis-Skelly are all available as Arteta seeks to solidify his backline.

PSV, meanwhile, are without recent signing Lucas Perez, as he was not registered for the Champions League squad. There are also concerns over the fitness of Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi, and Esmir Bajraktarevic, which could limit their attacking options.
Arsenal’s defensive structure remains solid, but their attacking struggles in recent weeks are a cause for concern. The Gunners have found goals hard to come by in open play, with set-pieces proving to be their most reliable route to scoring. PSV, buoyed by a passionate home crowd, will look to capitalise on Arsenal’s lack of cutting edge.
Arteta’s side must be disciplined and patient, ensuring they avoid conceding early. A compact midfield setup, likely revolving around Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard, could prove crucial in controlling the tempo. PSV will seek to exploit any defensive lapses, but Arsenal’s ability to absorb pressure could see them return to the Emirates with a positive result.
Prediction: Draw, 1-1
With everything to play for, this first leg could set the tone for what promises to be an enthralling knockout tie. Arsenal must find a way to break their attacking slump, while PSV will be eager to take advantage of home conditions before heading to London for the return leg.
