Pubs across England and Wales can open until 5am for England’s Round of 16 match against Mexico, which starts at 1am on Monday, after Sir Keir Starmer approved a blanket extension.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, MPs had pushed for additional leeway beyond the 2am hours already granted for England games at the World Cup.

England advanced by beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 on Wednesday. The tie in Mexico City will run beyond the previous provision.

The nationwide order removes the need for pubs to apply individually. Communities Secretary Steve Reed has written to council leaders to set out the change, having earlier urged them to approve late openings and saying some councils were still refusing.

Starmer said the move would let fans stay until the final whistle and would help the pubs and venues that bring communities together. He added that the country would be behind the team.

The hospitality sector welcomed the decision. NTIA chief executive Michael Kill called it a pragmatic step that could unite communities and boost venues as England head into one of their biggest games. British Beer and Pub Association boss Emma McClarkin said the tournament is vital for the trade and that swift action lets pubs remain the home of live sport.
