A brawl marred Portugal’s friendly with Chile before the interval, with Rafael Leao and Ivan Roman both sent off.

As reported by L'Équipe, Leao had targeted the game to impress Roberto Martinez before the World Cup, 11 June to 19 July. He hit the post in the ninth minute.

The flashpoint followed a robust duel between Joao Cancelo and Felipe Faundez, after which Leao clashed with Ivan Roman and blows were exchanged.

Italian referee Luca Zufferli showed red cards to both at 45+2.

The length of Leao’s suspension remains to be determined, and he could miss the start of the World Cup. The incident also damaged his standing with his national coach.
