According to L'Équipe, Rafael Van der Vaart has apologised after a racist joke on Dutch television, made during coverage of the Netherlands' 2-2 draw with Japan at the 2026 World Cup.

The former Netherlands international, 43, made the remark on NOS after the match while analysing Daichi Kamada's late equaliser and Micky van de Ven's marking error. He suggested Japanese players all look alike, then said it was only a joke and voiced frustration about what could be said on air. The exchange caused visible discomfort on set.

In a statement, the ex-Real Madrid and Tottenham midfielder said he had no racist or discriminatory intent. He accepted some people found his words hurtful, expressed sincere regret and apologised to anyone offended. He added that he respects people from all backgrounds.

Kick It Out criticised the remarks as racist stereotyping of Japan's team and noted that a lack of intent does not erase their impact.

The organisation also underlined the responsibility of pundits and broadcasters during a tournament watched by hundreds of millions worldwide. The row comes as the Netherlands prepare for their second match of the tournament, against Sweden on 20 June at 19:00 in France.
