The decision that was made to “ensure the necessary planning security for our team and our club" hasn't gone down well with the 34-year-old.

On Instagram, he wrote: “I never said I wanted to leave the club – and currently, I don't have any desire to move. I only extended my contract at the end of January.

"I committed to FCH when it was anything but certain that we would still be playing in the Bundesliga next season. Because I identify with the club.

“What I've always said, though, is that I'm a huge USA fan. And if an interesting offer from the MLS ever comes along one day, I'd be happy to hear it”.

The topic has also caused a stir in the dressing room, with Müller himself announcing his demotion to the team on Monday.

In a brief address without the coaching staff, the goalkeeper explained that the decision was made by the club, but that he would continue to do everything he could for the team.

Müller also made no secret of the fact that he couldn't understand the manner in which the decision was made and would have preferred to face competition.

Sky Sport is aware there was a discussion between the team, club management and coaching staff on Tuesday morning to eliminate possible misunderstandings.

The club expressed its irritation at Müller's Instagram post and “we were surprised by Kevin Müller's public comments” in response to a query from the German Press Agency.
