Rangers enter contract negotiations with key first-teamer but must show caution

One topic Ibrox Noise has not covered in great depth is John Souttar and his contract situation. Manager Danny Rohl has confirmed talks are underway regarding an extension. However there is a slight issue with this.

Contract talks underway

Souttar has proven himself a fairly sturdy and reliable defender. He may not be a leader. However he is as close to an alpha as Rangers have at the back. But he has long term injury concerns. Therefore the price has to be right.

Player stance and realism

Souttar has been guarded regarding contract talks. He always says he is happy at Rangers. He avoids discussion of logistics as players often do with the press. But the reality is Rangers must secure him at a good price.

Not a marquee defender

John Souttar is no David Weir. He is a good and decent defender. He generally will not let the side down. But he is nothing special. He is solid and he is dependable. He is maybe a modern day Dave McPherson. Funnily enough he came from the same club. Nevertheless he is not a marquee stopper.

Wages must reflect value

He is an important player but not an outstanding one. Danny Rohl must ensure the price is right. We do not want to see Souttar earning beyond £25,000 or £30,000. The standard wage for key Rangers players sits around £20,000. That level is acceptable. Souttar is worth that number. He is not worth much more.

Financial discipline required

We are sure the numbers will suit both club and player. But Rangers must not overpay. We reported yesterday how the club is improving financially. The club wasted huge cash before. The likes of Danilo cost £11 million lost. This cannot happen again.

Final word on balance

Souttar must earn a wage equal to his output and value. We do not want reports of £35,000 wages. He is important but not that important. Rangers must reserve those wages for true marquee players. Right now nobody at the club fits that bracket.
