If a recent transfer update from Sky Sports News is true, Rangers, keen to add to their attacking options down the wide, have identified Jahnoah Markelo as a summer target. The winger only joined Coventry City earlier this year, but could now leave on a season-long loan, having failed to stake a claim in Frank Lampard’s newly promoted Premier League side.

Born in the Netherlands, the 23-year-old Suriname international progressed through ASV De Dijk, AVV Zeeburgia, Ajax and Twente’s academy ranks before being released by the latter in 2022. Fellow Eredivisie outfit Go Ahead Eagles snapped him on a Bosman. However, the youngster plied his trade in Croatia a year later to join Kustošija after just 8 appearances for The Pride of the IJssel Kowet.

Markelo was on the move again when Slovenian club Celje roped him in the summer of 2024. But they accepted an offer from FC Zurich within a couple of months. Following a brief stint with the reserves, he cemented a regular first-team status in Switzerland. Despite winning the race over Portsmouth and securing his services for £4.3m late in the January window, he was only handed around 45 minutes of gametime by The Sky Blues across five substitute appearances en route to conquering the Championship title.

Rangers are undergoing a squad rebuild under new boss Derek McInnes to overcome last season’s disappointment. The Light Blues are chasing someone who would slot in an inverted role from the right-hand flank. They are monitoring several left-footed stars, with Brighton’s Amario Cozier-Duberry also emerging as a target, according to rumours. Nevertheless, a deal seems complicated for the in-demand forward, and Markelo, surplus to requirements at CBS Arena, would be a more realistic alternative for the Glasgow giants.

Known for his electric pace, sharp dribbling and high shot volume, the Coventry City outcast could flourish with more gametime north of the border. Although he needs to work on his physical adaptability, his ability to create chances, draw fouls and cut inside from the flank would inject more firepower at Ibrox.
