Rangers follow up Josh Windass interest with shock move for Joe Garner

No sooner had the ink barely dried on news that Rangers have made a loan offer for Josh Windass, which in itself has exacerbated and exasperated Rangers fans and their view of the current direction of the club, when Ibrox Noise sources learned of another ex-Rangers player that the club is tracking.

Another familiar name resurfaces

Rangers, of course, have had many poor signings over the years, especially these last ten or so, where every dreg from the lower leagues of the EFL appears to have arrived in Govan. Mark Warburton certainly brought in a few, and one of those he was most certainly guilty of was indeed the esteemed Mr Windass. He was the most divisive player Rangers have had in the last decade, and the fact that Danny Rohl is trying to bring him back is staggering enough on its own.

Yet another blast from the past

That concern is compounded by the latest absolute corker from Govan, where Ibrox Noise sources have learned Rangers have approached former striker Joe Garner. Garner is soon to be out of contract (4 days in fact), and the 37-year-old has been fairly mediocre throughout his entire career. Rangers seemingly want him for his experience up front and also value his prior awareness of the club.

Numbers that tell their own story

He has one goal this season for Oldham, and he is League Two fodder in the lower echelons of England’s grassroots. Consequently, Rangers’ interest doubles down on the absolute slop the club is chasing. Garner was abysmal the first time around for £1.5M, and his market value is now around £20,000. Rangers are seeking his experience up front, and we hope it is not as an outright first choice striker. Then again, is he any worse than what we already have?

Windass revisited

Nevertheless, Rangers’ interest in Garner as another re-signing takes this situation to a new level. The interest in Windass was bad enough on its own. He was not even that great for Rangers, in fact far from it, and extremely divisive. He was a cheap version of Frank Lampard, a box to box midfielder making late runs and scoring occasionally. However, his personality was extremely poor, to the point fans were unbelievably divided over him.

A familiar pattern

That same division is now mirrored in his spiritual successor, James Tavernier, with fans remaining heavily split on the captain. To bring Windass back would be borderline farce, but adding Joe Garner to the mix is beyond the pale. Yet these days, what else do we expect?

Where does it end?

We already know Rohl is targeting another lower league European left back, and it just keeps going. It now feels like ambition has completely left the building, and we’re getting that nagging feeling that Ronaldo and Messi are not going to be walking through the door anymore.
