While we are not going to pretend that £3.5M signing Tuur Rommens is the ghost of Arthur Numan, nevertheless, Rangers new left back is a very fine addition. While a few of us were pretty pleased at Ridvan Yilmaz as well, nevertheless, most of us had wanted to see the likes of Josh Doig from Hibs instead. We could not quite fathom why we had gone for a rather random Turk. Unfortunately, Yilmaz did not really work out. However, Rommens CV is far superior. He has shone in the Belgian top flight and was wanted by some other serious clubs as well. Rangers secured that one. £8M combined between him and Tachi Chukwuani is a decent start to the January window, and Andreas Skov Olsen is due to be next.
However, regarding Tuur Rommens, what on earth do we have here? Well, the fact is, this boy has a huge engine on him. He is a very serious and high quality left back. He is the type of left back that might not be thrills and spills, but he will firmly get the job done. He will never stop running, and he can even get an assist or two. He is a very serious and high quality left back.
The last decent left back Rangers actually had probably was Borna Barisic, for his faults, and there were a few. He was, however, a Croatian international. Even if his career after Rangers reflected that of so many Rangers alumni, not great. Nevertheless, for Rangers, he was decent. Not breathtaking, but decent. But his big deal was, of course, the crossing, that left peg. Tuur Rommens does not have that in his locker. He does not get the kind of assists and crosses that Barisic had. But he is the kind of player who is reliable, dependable, and perhaps what we would call a supercharged Kirk Broadfoot.
In the future, he could well be a Belgian senior international. He has enough caps at youth level. You do not play for Westerlo in Belgium if you cannot play a bit. The Belgian top flight is a far superior league to Scotland, let us not forget. Maybe it is not as physically demanding, but it is definitely far superior in quality. Is Rommens ready for the SPL? He will know that this league is not an easy one. It is not necessarily the most glamorous either. But his style could actually suit that. He is fairly no nonsense and solid.
As we say, no frills or spills, but he is an absolute huge upgrade over Jaydon Meghoma. Rangers current senior left back is hardly anything to write about. He is not really that impressive. He has been passable and maybe serviceable at times. But he has been downright poor at defending. This guy is a distinct upgrade from that. This guy is a distinct upgrade from that. We look forward to watching him in action.
