Rangers owners ignore major suggestion from Richard Gough

Rangers’ hierarchy continues to blunder in the dark after it was confirmed Richard Gough has been ignored by the owners after stating the club badly needs a defensive coach.

The 9IAR legend explained that he spoke to the owners and board about how badly a defensive tutor is needed for Rangers’ rear, but never got a response on it.

Rangers men

He further added that Rangers need Rangers men in these kinds of roles, but with just Steven Smith the only link to the successful past Rangers have on the coaching staff, it seems such a warning is being ignored.

He said:

“They should be going around people like (Ally) McCoist and gaining as much advice as they can, put it all together from guys who have been successful at the club.”

It’s abundantly apparent to anyone with eyes that Rangers’ defence is dire. Not only were the summer recruits rather awful, but they aren’t being managed with any panache.

Danny Rohl’s goals conceded tab in the league is admittedly quite impressive. But few would allege the defence actually looks solid.

John Souttar has been poor this campaign, struggling to judge the ball half the time. Nasser Djiga’s positioning and reading has been off, and Derek Cornelius hasn’t formed much of a duo or trio with anyone. That Manny Fernandez has been ‘ok’ gives some idea of how rotten the backline is.

Julien Rodriguez

Add the woeful, horrible fullbacks and you essentially have the worst SPL defence Rangers have ever had. Bring back Karl Svensson and Julien Rodriguez please, and we’re not even kidding. Oliver Bernard was better than this.

And if the bosses are ignoring club legends’ suggestions of having proper defensive coaches with a Rangers persuasion in the ranks, it does suggest they really aren’t that interested.

Rangers used to be formed off the back of a robust defence. Back to 9IAR and we had Gough himself, Butcher, Davie McPherson (even if he was a bit ridiculed by some at the time) and a host of other stalwarts. There’s been Boumsong, Weir, Amo, Cuellar, Ehiogu, Bougherra, and many many other marquee stoppers.

Peterborough

Now we just sign any old slop from Peterborough and bob’s your uncle.

Even Rob Kiernan was better than the mess we have at the back now.

And of course, only James Tavernier, Fernandez and Souttar are actually our defenders. The rest are loans, even if Cornelius is an option.

Gough’s demands are fair, these guys need coaching.

Seems like the club isn’t interested in that.
