Rangers to make major loss (again) as Robin Propper finalises exit

Robin Propper’s brief and underwhelming Rangers stint has come to an end, with the Dutch defender sealing a move back to FC Twente for a reported £1 million. It marks a clear financial loss for the Ibrox club, who signed him for £1.5 million last summer, triggering his release clause from the Eredivisie side. Despite arriving with a solid reputation and leadership credentials as Twente’s former captain, the centre-back never quite found his feet in Glasgow.

His time at Rangers was blighted by inconsistency, injuries and a struggle to adapt to the physical demands of Scottish football. While he did rack up over thirty appearances, his performances often left fans unconvinced. There were glimpses of composure and experience, but they were overshadowed by a lack of pace and a tendency to switch off at key moments. As pressure mounted and fan patience wore thin, it became increasingly clear that Propper was not suited to the demands of Ibrox.

His return to Twente feels like a move that suits all parties. The Dutch side regain their former skipper, Rangers offload a misfiring asset and both clubs can move on. For the player himself, it is a chance to restore confidence and consistency back in familiar territory. He leaves Rangers without much to show for his time, aside from a couple of goals and a handful of passable displays. This was not the marquee signing many hoped he would be.

This sale underlines the rebuild underway at Ibrox. The new regime led by Russell Martin has already started reshaping the squad, and Propper’s exit is one of the first signs of that shift. There is little room for sentiment or underperforming assets and the club needs players who can meet the expectations immediately. In this case, the Dutchman simply could not.

As Ibrox Noise noted, Propper was seen meeting with officials ahead of the deal being finalised. His struggles were already covered back in December by Ibrox Noise, highlighting a lack of adaptation. The original low fee that brought him in was discussed in this article, showing it was a calculated gamble that ultimately did not pay off.

The Sky confirmation confirms the deal is done and Rangers can now look forward with clarity.
