Claudio Ranieri is set on finding solutions to Roma’s problems on the training pitch.
In the last week, the veteran technician took it upon himself to experiment with various formations ahead of the highly anticipated match against Napoli.
The first training sessions of the new course have shown particular attention to defensive solidity and tactical flexibility, with a lower center of gravity to ensure greater coverage.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Ranieri tested two different configurations: a Roma with Paulo Dybala in a classic 4-4-2, and one without him, able to oscillate between different playing systems.
With Dybala not yet at his best, the coach could opt for a more compact formation, focused on solidity and the ability to quickly retreat in the defensive phase.
The Giallorossi backline now seems to be defined. The back four should see Gianluca Mancini and Evan N’Dicka in the center, flanked by Celik and Angelino on the wings.
Mats Hummels, not yet in top form, should start on the bench. This formation guarantees balance and security, key elements to face a Napoli in great shape.
The midfield remains the most fluid department, with Ranieri who could alternate two different solutions.
The first includes three midfielders and two wingers, with Matias Soulé and El Shaarawy ready to cover also in the defensive phase.
The second option, however, includes a thicker midfield, where Ranieri can count on at least six alternatives.
Two starting spots seem already assigned: Koné, fresh from excellent performances with the French national team, and Cristante, considered irreplaceable by Ranieri already during his previous experience in Giallorossi.
The possible advancement of Pellegrini could free up space for Pisilli, a young midfielder who has impressed in recent training sessions and could represent a tactical surprise.
Ranieri’s teams are known for starting from the principle of solidity, and this Roma will be no exception.
The first week of work at Trigoria focused on improving the defensive organization, but also on building an identity that allows them to face one of the strongest teams in the championship with personality.
