Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund expressed delight with his performance after bagging a brace to help Napoli to a 2-0 Serie A victory over Cremonese.
Hojlund has enjoyed a dramatic uptick in form and fortunes since leaving United during the summer transfer window for a season-long loan at Napoli.
His brace against Cremonese over the weekend took his tally for the reigning Italian champions to six top-flight goals and nine across all competitions.
The Dane’s two strikes in Cremona mean that he has surpassed his league goal record for United last term in 20 fewer matches. He is also now Napoli’s top scorer in both the league and overall this term. He is the third-highest scorer in Serie A, only trailing Christian Pulisic and Lautaro Martinez.
After the final whistle, Hojlund spoke to DAZN Italia and gave his verdict on his performance.
He said [as quoted by Football Italia], “It [netting a brace with his weaker right foot] doesn’t happen very often!”
“I’m just happy with the result. 2-0 here is not easy. Cremonese troubled a lot of teams this season. It was a difficult task, but we brought three points home for Napoli.”
Asked if he is in the best moment of his professional career, Hojlund answered, “I am getting better every season. Obviously, I was a bit younger at Atalanta, I’ve got a bit more experience now, playing in the Premier League and the Champions League.”
“I’m playing alongside some great players now, like Politano, who doesn’t get his flowers because he hasn’t scored many goals this season, but he helps the team so much and is a top player. He’s so important for us.”
Napoli boss Antonio Conte also hailed Hojlund’s improvement.
Conte remarked, “Hojlund is a player who is very young, he’s still only 22 years old, and can improve a great deal. Since he first joined us, he has already progressed to become a dominant player in that role, because he’s starting to understand the right positions to take, how to defend the ball, when to come towards it or back off.”
“He is really well connected with the team. In my style of football, the strikers have a very important and special role in the overall approach, and he has huge margin for further improvement.”
Hojlund’s switch to Napoli included an obligation to join the Partenopei permanently if they qualify for the Champions League.
