Sir Jim Ratcliffe says that Michael Carrick is doing an “excellent job” as Man Utd head coach, but refused to comment on his prospects of getting the job permanently.

The 44-year-old has overseen a massive upturn in form since replacing Ruben Amorim in the dugout, winning six of his first eight matches in charge.

No team in the Premier League has won more points over that period, even after the interim boss suffered his first defeat in charge at Newcastle United last week.

“He’s doing an excellent job. Yeah, absolutely,” Ratcliffe told Sky Sports at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

There have been calls for Carrick to get the job on a permanent basis following a terrific start in the role, but Ratcliffe refused to be drawn on the matter. “No, not going there,” was his response when asked about the possibility.

Man Utd face top four rivals Aston Villa at home on Sunday in what will be a hugely important game for their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

“Yes, clearly we’re thinking about that,” Ratcliffe added. “But there’s still seven or eight games to go. Still a while yet.”
