Real Madrid are set to oversee a defensive revolution this summer, and understandably so given how they were frustrated in the department throughout last season.

With David Alaba leaving the club, Dean Huijsen not convincing with his level and Eder Militao perpetually injured, the club have struggled for options in the department.

Even Antonio Rudiger, who was dependable in recent years, is looking to have slowed down and the team does not have a clear long-term centre-back pairing. Raul Asencio is one candidate who emerged as an option but who has not convinced.

Decision to be taken

The Real Madrid academy graduate has not disappointed during his stint with the first-team, but there is a feeling that he is not suited to be part of the team’s leading defensive pairing in the long run.

He has, thus, been linked with a departure this summer, although there are conflicting reports on the same

As relayed by Ramon Alvarez, Asencio does indeed have a long-term contract at Real Madrid and his immediate future at the club is not in jeopardy.

It will, however, depend a lot on the incoming manager. Indeed, everything will eventually come down to whether or not Jose Mourinho counts on the youngster and wants him to stay with the team.

Should the new coach be against Asencio’s skill set, the player may well opt to leave the club.

Likely a backup

Real Madrid are gunning for a new centre-back signing this summer and all signs point to a big-name arrival to reinforce the department.

Players like Josko Gvardiol, Alessandro Bastoni, and Nico Schlotterbeck have been linked with Los Blancos, and it is clear that any such name who arrives will be a regular starter.

In that sense, it is almost impossible for Asencio to stay and command a starting position even if Mourinho backs him. After all, Huijsen, Rudiger and the new arrival will all be ahead of him on the pecking order.

Asencio will thus have the thought of being a backup defender on his mind while taking a call on his future.
