Real Madrid young centre-back Dean Huijsen has voiced fierce criticism of Spanish refereeing after his one-match ban, for a red card received against Real Sociedad, was upheld – despite a public admission by the refereeing authority that the decision was wrong.
The controversy stems from an incident in the 32nd minute at Anoeta, when referee Jesus Gil Manzano sent Huijsen off for a foul on Mikel Oyarzabal, judged to be “denial of a clear goal-scoring opportunity” (DOGSO).
Huijsen and Real Madrid maintain that Eder Militao was close enough to provide cover, meaning the challenge should have been punished with a yellow card rather than an outright red.
The Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) acknowledged that the red card was excessive, saying the criteria for DOGSO were not fully met and that a yellow card would have been more appropriate.
Real Madrid initially appealed to the Disciplinary Committee of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), but that appeal was rejected and Huijsen was given a one-match ban.
Real Madrid then moved to the RFEF Appeals Committee to have the ban overturned, but as confirmed earlier today, faced rejection there as well.

Given the rejection of the latest appeal, Huijsen will now be suspended for Saturday’s game against Espanyol and the youngster took to social media to hit out at the system.
Expressing his bewilderment at the bizarre situation, he wrote:
1️⃣ Gil Manzano unjustly sends off Huijsen 2️⃣ VAR doesn’t intervene and allows it 3️⃣ Real Madrid play with one man down for two-thirds of the match 4️⃣ The CTA admits the mistake 5️⃣ The CTA, once the mistake has been acknowledged, punishes Huijsen with another match ban.
“The mistake is admitted but I’m still punished, great image for Spanish football” he captioned, with a facepalm emoji.
Following the rejection from the Appeals Committee, Real Madrid are taking their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sports in Spain (TAD).
