Real Madrid have agreed to sign Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella in a deal worth over €50 million (£43m), according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Spain international defender reportedly wanted to leave Stamford Bridge this summer due to Chelsea’s inconsistency and now seems set to join Jose Mourinho’s side.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were after his signature, but Real Madrid have won the race, bringing an end to his four-year stay with the Blues.

Cucurella heads to Madrid, where they have serious issues at left-back, with Fran Garcia not up to par. The same goes for Ferland Mendy, who spends most of the time injured.

Madrid signed Alvaro Carreras from Benfica last season, but he has failed to live up to expectations, prompting the club to sign Cucurella.

A tenacious defender, he will fit right into Mourinho’s system. After a difficult first season at Chelsea, he found his footing and established himself as one of the best in the world in his position.

He did not have the best 2025/26 campaign, but Madrid are banking on him bouncing back when he returns home.

As for Chelsea, they can decide not to spend money on a replacement, given the depth of their talent.

Geovany Quenda joins this summer and has played extensively at both right and left-wing back positions for Sporting CP, which is perfect for Xabi Alonso, who operated a back three at Bayer Leverkusen.

If he goes with a back four, Chelsea also signed Jorrel Hato last summer, who can play as a centre-half and a left-back.

Valentin Barco is poised to join the Club World Cup champions and can play as a left-back, left-wing-back, and in midfield.

The Blues might still decide to dip into the market for reinforcement, but it must be a world-class option as the roster is seriously crying out for quality.
