While Xabi Alonso’s dismissal may have been an unexpected decision for many, Florentino Perez appears to have got it spot-on once again.

After all, Real Madrid have looked far better under Alvaro Arbeloa who is showing a great understanding of the team’s philosophy and profiles and making good use of the inherent talent.

The win over Villarreal last night, needless to say, was a massive statement from the team as they took down La Liga’s third-placed side and even sit as provisional leaders on the standings.

After suffering a torrid December and start to January, Real Madrid have looked more exciting, attacking and fresh since Arbeloa’s appointment and a lot has to do with the fact that they are again embracing the counter-attacking style of football.

The club and the dressing room strongly believe that they can win both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League this season if they keep up a similar form and constantly improve and learn from their mistakes.

While the dream may sound overambitious at first, the scenario in La Liga is far closer than many imagine as Real Madrid are two points clear of Barcelona. Even if the Catalans win their game in hand, they will just be a point above Los Blancos.

Given that there is still a Clasico to be played in the league, moreover, Real Madrid will have a direct chance to take three points off Barcelona. Should they win all their games from this point, in fact, they will be the guaranteed champions.

In the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid are quite comfortably placed to finish in the top-8 and will look to get the qualification to the knockouts done next week. 

From that point, the competition will be a run of moments and individual brilliance – something Real Madrid can claim to be the best at across the globe.
