Real Madrid have appointed José Mourinho head coach for three seasons to 30 June 2029. The club said in a statement that he will begin on 13 July, the start of pre-season. A board meeting on Thursday approved his return and extended Florentino Pérez’s presidency to 2030.
His first spell lasted three years and one day, ending on one June 2013 with victory over Osasuna. He led 178 games, winning 128, and delivered the 100-point Liga, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. It also brought rows with players, confrontations with rivals and complaints about referees.
He arrived on Tuesday, visited Valdebebas and settled into a refurbished office. At 63 he is described as calmer, though his edge remains. He is expected to impose order on a dressing room weary of Carlo Ancelotti, that challenged Xabi Alonso and paid little heed to Álvaro Arbeloa.
Planning is under way after the arrivals of Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konaté and a new deal for Antonio Rüdiger. Madrid want a left-sided defender, with Joško Gvardiol and Riccardo Calafiori mentioned, plus midfield reinforcements.
Mourinho met Jorge Mendes, José Ángel Sánchez and Juni Calafat to continue recruitment. A 150 million euro offer to Atlético for Julián Álvarez was rejected, while moves for João Neves and Vitinha failed and Michael Olise was unavailable. Bernardo Silva seems closer, it was formalised by paying a 15 million euro clause with his agreement, and Álvaro Arbeloa’s time as first-team coach ended.
