Real Madrid’s search for a midfielder to help control games continues on, and it appears that Manchester City star Rodri Hernandez has more to do halt it. The Spain international was at one point considered the ideal option to direct matters at the Santiago Bernabeu, but the hierarchy at Real Madrid is less certain these days.

Los Blancos had intended to pursue his signature last summer, but an anterior cruciate ligament injury staved off their interest for another year. This season they have been observing his return from injury closely, with scouts in the stands in the Premier League to view his progress.

Real Madrid cool interest in Rodri

According to Ramon Alvarez de Mon, Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Rodri. The 29-year-old was involved in a comfortable 5-1 aggregate victory for Los Blancos in the Champions League Round of 16 over Manchester City, and struggled to influence matters as they might have liked. Alvarez de Mon explains that no final decision has been taken, but Rodri’s performances at the World Cup this summer could play a major role in Real Madrid’s final decision.

Rodri opened door to Real Madrid move last week

Last week Rodri declared that he would be open to the idea of returning to La Liga at some point, and said that his past with Atletico Madrid was no impediment to joining Real Madrid in the future. Los Blancos have been linked with a number of other options too, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Vitinha, AZ Alkmaar’s Kees Smit, and less often Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

For their part, Manchester City are keen to renew Rodri’s deal. Currently he has just over a year left on his deal, and it seems likely that if Real Madrid will not get a stronger negotiating position to sign him, unless he decides to run down his contract and leave on a free next season.
