There was plenty of curiosity surrounding Jose Mourinho’s first day back at Real Madrid, but for Dean Huijsen, the occasion felt a little different.
While many members of the squad were working under the Portuguese coach for the first time, the young centre-back was reunited with a manager he already knows well from their time together at Roma.
That previous connection meant Huijsen walked into pre-season with a clearer understanding of what Mourinho expects, and, perhaps more importantly, the person behind the demanding public image.
As Real Madrid officially kicked off preparations for the 2026/27 campaign at Valdebebas, Huijsen took time to greet supporters before briefly speaking to the media.
Mourinho’s training sessions have carried a reputation for intensity, discipline and attention to detail.
It is one of the reasons Real Madrid turned to the experienced coach in the hope of restoring the club’s identity, which had faded over recent seasons.
Huijsen, however, appears completely comfortable with that environment.
Having already worked with Mourinho earlier in his career, the defender spoke warmly about their reunion.
“I’ve known him before, so that’s great,” Huijsen said, as per Mundo Deportivo.
Real Madrid’s 2025 summer signing was then asked to describe the Real Madrid manager in a few words, to which he said, “He’s a good person.”
Furthermore, Huijsen also revealed that he had kept himself in shape throughout the summer break and was ready for the demanding schedule ahead, stating, “Well, we’ve got to train.”
Apart from discussing Mourinho, Huijsen also looked ahead to what he hopes will be a successful campaign for Real Madrid.

Asked about his ambitions for the season, the young defender did not hesitate.
“Lots of trophies,” he reiterated.
Lastly, Huijsen was also asked about fellow defender Ibrahima Konate, who has recently joined Real Madrid to strengthen Mourinho’s defensive options.
Although the pair have not yet had the opportunity to build a relationship, the Spanish international already has plenty of respect for his new teammate.
“I don’t know [Konate]”, he said, before adding, “he’s a very good player.”
With Konate’s arrival increasing competition in central defence, Huijsen knows that earning regular minutes will require consistency from the very beginning of pre-season.
