Real Madrid want to add a midfielder and a centre-back to continue their summer overhaul.

According to ESPN, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez is among the options they rate most highly. No formal move has been made yet.

The rebuild is already well underway. Madrid have announced Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva and Ibrahima Konaté this week, with Denzel Dumfries set to follow.

Each signing is designed to reshape the squad for new coach Jose Mourinho.

A fresh midfielder is now the priority. Fernandez has been on the agenda at Valdebebas for months, with the club admiring him since his Benfica days. He left Benfica for Chelsea in a British-record deal in 2023.

Cost, though, is the obvious obstacle. ESPN reports Chelsea would demand around £120m if the Argentine pushed to leave.

That figure has led Madrid to weigh cheaper alternatives, including West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi.

The player’s stance could help. Fernandez would welcome the move, and Mourinho is a key backer of the deal. The coach already played a major role in signing Silva from Manchester City.

His desire is not new, either. Last April, Chelsea benched Fernandez for two games after he hinted at a LaLiga switch. “I’d like to live in Madrid. I really like it, it’s similar to Buenos Aires,” he said at the time.

The need is rooted in recent struggles. Madrid have never fully replaced Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, and two trophyless seasons have exposed that gap. Mourinho wants more control and quality in the centre.

Defence is also on the list. After landing Konaté, the manager wants another centre-back, with Manchester City’s Ruben Dias among the candidates.

Reinforcements in attack have not been ruled out, but talks for Fernandez are expected to be far from straightforward.
