Real Madrid’s biggest operation for the next summer transfer window is the arrival of Alphonso Davies on a free transfer.

The Canadian defender is reportedly very close to completing his move to Spain and has repeatedly rejected Bayern Munich’s approaches over a contract renewal.

With his deal expiring in the summer, Real Madrid’s plan to swoop him for free is as close to materialising as has been. In fact, word has it that the player and Los Blancos already have an agreement in place over his transfer.

Romano’s two cents

Despite the optimism in the Spanish capital over the left-back’s arrival, however, ever-reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has come out to state that there has not been as much progress as is being reported.

He states that there is no definitive agreement between Real Madrid and Davies over a move in the summer, nor is there any contract signed between them at this point. The deal is thus far from done.

Davies’ agent himself publicly denied the existence of any such agreement in a recent interview, but it later came to light that his statements were simply because he had no option but to deny the development.

After all, the left-back is only formally allowed to discuss his future and terms with external clubs after January 1 and openly reporting such an agreement at this point would not go down well. Moreover, Real Madrid do not intend to ruin their relationship with the Bavarians.

Romano’s latest update may thus be an extension of the same school of thought, but the Merengues would rather close the deal at the earliest owing to interest from Barcelona.
