Barring any surprises, Liverpool superstar Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

The deal had been in the works for quite some time now and an agreement over a five-year deal is said to be imminent, with the Englishman set to become Los Blancos’ first signing of the summer.

Lucas Vazquez’s future in doubt

Alexander-Arnold’s imminent arrival, however, could spell trouble for Lucas Vazquez and his future at Real Madrid, reports Rodra P (h/t RM4Arab).

Indeed, there are now serious doubts at the Santiago Bernabeu about renewing the 33-year-old right-back’s contract which expires at the end of the ongoing season.

With Dani Carvajal expected to return from injury this summer and Alexander-Arnold also set to arrive, the right-back position will become crowded, potentially affecting Vazquez’s continuity.

The Spanish right-back remains a key presence in the dressing room and has contributed significantly on the pitch in recent seasons.

However, as things stand, sources from Valdebebas suggest that renewing Vazquez’s contract will be complicated. The matter will be discussed in May, potentially coinciding with Alexander-Arnold’s arrival.

What has Vazquez said?

Back in January, Lucas Vazquez spoke about his future at Real Madrid, leaving the door open to all possibilities.

“My mind is full of everything. The option of continuing, not continuing, going somewhere else or retiring. I feel very good. I just want to enjoy this season,” he said.

In case Vazquez is not offered a new contract, the veteran defender will not have any shortage of suitors as he already has lucrative proposals from Saudi Arabia and the MLS.

A decision on his continuity will not be made right away, but as things stand, with Alexander-Arnold’s arrival looking like a certainty, the 33-year-old ace’s renewal at Real Madrid appears complicated.
