Real Madrid are already working on plans for the 2025/26 season, focusing on several key areas of the squad.

Strengthening at right-back is a priority, with Trent Alexander-Arnold already identified as the top target. Real Madrid are also looking at signing a left-back, a midfielder, and a centre-back.

One position which is not seen as a priority, though, is the goalkeeping department, with Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin holding down the fort.

Real Madrid like Joan Garcia

Despite that, journalist Melchor Ruiz of COPE reports that Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia and hold him in very high regard.

The 23-year-old is widely considered the standout shot-stopper in La Liga this season thanks to his excellent performances for the Catalan club.

While Real Madrid are not actively searching for a new goalkeeper, the 23-year-old has caught the attention of the club’s decision-makers as they quietly prepare for possible changes in the department.

What’s the situation with Courtois and Lunin?

Courtois remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world, but at 32 and coming off a serious knee injury and other physical setbacks, questions about his long-term durability are growing.

Meanwhile, his understudy, Lunin, has impressed when called upon but may look to leave this summer in search of regular first-team football.

Although Real Madrid are not actively pursuing a new keeper, Garcia is highly regarded within the club.

If the current goalkeeping dynamic shifts, especially with Lunin’s potential departure, the Espanyol shot-stopper could become a top candidate.

Last summer, Arsenal had made a move for Garcia, but he stayed loyal to the Catalan club. This time around, competition for his signature is expected to be fierce once again.

For now, Real Madrid are simply monitoring the Spaniard. But if the goalkeeping puzzle changes, Joan Garcia could quickly move to the top of their shortlist.
