Real Madrid have opened disciplinary proceedings after a fan was spotted allegedly “making a Nazi salute” inside the stadium before Wednesday’s Champions League tie against Benfica.

The Spanish giants confirmed, following the win over the Portuguese side, which confirmed their spot in the Champions League knockout stages, that the unnamed suppporter was caught on camera performing the gesture in the Supporters' Stand.

He was swiftly ejected by security staff before kick-off and will now face an investigation.A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF announces that it has urgently requested the club's Disciplinary Committee to initiate immediate expulsion proceedings against the member who was caught on television cameras making the Nazi salute in the area where the Supporters' Stand is located, moments before the start of the match between Real Madrid and Benfica.

“This member was located by club security personnel moments after he appeared on the broadcast and was immediately expelled from the Santiago Bernabéu stadium.

“Real Madrid condemns these types of gestures and expressions that incite violence and hatred in sport and in society.”

The Athletic report that a Nazi salute is not considered a criminal offence in Spain, but can be punishable by law if accompanied by other acts which constitute a hate crime.

Vinicius Jr scored as Real Madrid recorded a 2-1 win on Wednesday, running out 3-1 winners on aggregate.
