While Carlo Ancelotti has done little wrong this season with a thin and depleted Real Madrid squad, there is still considerable pressure on him with shouts for his departure.

The manager could not have done much better in terms of navigating through the injury crisis, but failure to win major trophies could lead to a potential exit.

Xabi Alonso, on that front, has been a top target for Los Blancos for a long time now and has long been seen as Ancelotti’s natural successor.

The Bayer Leverkusen manager, however, has shown signs of being interested in continuing in Germany in recent weeks generating worry in the offices at Valdebebas.

Xabi Alonso speaks

Speaking to the media in a recent press interaction, the Real Madrid managerial target was asked about his future and a possible departure from Bayer Leverkusen.

“There was nothing to decide, it was a good break, which we needed. The first week was to rest and the second week was to focus on the next games. I said that our focus, mine and all the players’ focus, is on what we have,” he began via Mundo Deportivo.

We should not think too much about the future. We take it one game at a time. Individually, that’s my interest as well, and the players’ interest is the same. I’m focused on this season, and nothing else,” he added.

While Alonso’s statements are not particularly encouraging for Real Madrid in any capacity, news of Ancelotti’s departure only further the administration’s worry over the situation.

After all, the Italian tactician is now not only on the radar of the Brazilian national team but also several teams in Saudi Arabia who hope to lure him through their financial muscle.

Ancelotti has time and time again reiterated his desire to continue in the Spanish capital, but the team’s roller-coaster run of form this term may well push the administration into taking a drastic decision at the end of the season.

Needless to say, a lot will hinge on how the men in white fare in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
