Heading into this contest on Wednesday, Flamengo’s sporting director, Jose Boto, spoke to AS.

One of the many topics of the discussion was around Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr. and whether or not he would ever consider a return to Brazil.

Boto doesn’t rule out Vinicius Jr. return

In response to the question, Boto said there will be a day when the Real Madrid superstar will want to return to Flamengo, his boyhood club.

“People who come to Flamengo have a love and passion for it that lasts forever. There will be a time when they want to come back. That’s for sure,” Boto said.

It must be remembered that Vinicius Jr. was a prodigy of the Flamengo youth academy. He had played for the academy for 12 years and had even made 69 competitive appearances for the club.

The Brazilian eventually left Flamengo in the summer of 2018 to join Real Madrid, as soon as he turned 18.

Since then, the attacker has gone on to make 335 appearances for Real Madrid and is regarded as one of the finest in the business. He was notably close to winning the Ballon d’Or in 2024.

However, Boto believes Vinicius, who is still just 25, will want to return to Brazil someday, just like his compatriot Neymar.

At the age of 33, the former Barcelona superstar is once again playing for his boyhood club Santos. He is desperately eyeing a place in the Brazilian national team for next year’s World Cup.

Meanwhile, as far as Flamengo are concerned, their star player, Saul Niguez, recently raised eyebrows by claiming that the Santiago Bernabeu has a dead atmosphere.
