Ahead of their clash with Liverpool on Tuesday night, a delegation from Real Madrid attended Diogo Jota’s memorial to pay tribute to the deceased forward and his brother, Andre. The pair tragically passed away in June during a car accident in Zamora, in the North-West of Spain.
The delegation consisted of former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, who attended media duties earlier that evening, manager Xabi Alonso, and Ambassador Emilio Butragueno.
Real Madrid’s wreath included the following message, as they paid tribute to the Portuguese forward. As pointed out by Marca, Liverpool’s tribute to Amancio Amaro two years ago is still remembered fondly at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid CF expresses its deepest condolences to Liverpool FC and to the family of Diogo Jota. Football mourns the loss of an exceptional person and a remarkable player.
Meanwhile Alexander-Arnold, who shared a dressing room with Jota until this June, left his own personal message and flowers.
My mate Diogo. You are so missed, but still so loved. Yours and Andre’s memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and I will always remember the good times we shared. Miss you, my friend, every day. Love Trent and the family.

The above was accompanied by a red joystick, a reference to Jota’s trademark celebration after scoring. Alexander-Arnold was hit hard by the loss, and made his own emotional tribute to Jota at the time too. The England international ended up being in action just days later in the Club World Cup, facing two of Jota’s former Portugal teammates in Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves on a tender occasion. Neves had grown up alongside Jota, and the two were very close, with Neves a pall-bearer at the funeral.
