According to AS, Real Madrid starlet Franco Mastantuono is at risk of missing out on Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad, with manager Lionel Scaloni expected to announce the final list before the weekend.

Having endured a difficult debut season with Los Blancos, the 18-year-old prospect, who could leave on loan in the summer, faces the possibility of being left out of the final squad cut. A decision is expected before Sunday.

That was the enigmatic response from Scaloni when discussing the final squad selection for the reigning world champions ahead of the World Cup.

The Argentine manager is taking his time over Mastantuono’s case.

Once the season concluded, the Real Madrid starlet travelled to Buenos Aires to join the national team camp, alongside the other players included in Argentina’s preliminary squad, with the objective of securing one of the 26 final places.

Since Monday, the coaching staff have analysed every case individually. According to Scaloni himself, the main criterion for surviving the final selection is “the performances of the players and that they arrive in the best possible condition.”

In that regard, Mastantuono appears to have strengthened his chances. His physical condition is described as excellent, almost outstanding. However, his inclusion is still far from guaranteed.

If he ultimately fails to make the squad, it would be because of a technical decision rather than a medical concern.

Perhaps not Mastantuono’s time yet

Mastantuono is widely regarded as one of the future mainstays and leaders of the Argentina national team, although not necessarily within the current cycle.

Within the Argentine Football Association, there are differing opinions regarding his development.

Some voices are advocating patience, arguing that he should progress gradually through each stage of his career. Others believe he should already be given space within the senior structure in order to begin adapting to the national team’s environment.

If they decide to err on the side of caution, the youngster might not make it to the World Cup. Alternatively, with there being some injuries in the squad, it could open the doors for the versatile teenager.
