Real Madrid beat Benfica 2-1 on Wednesday to reach the Champions League last 16, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Vinicius Junior to the fore.
According to L'Équipe, the tie unfolded amid the Vinicius-Prestianni affair, yet Madrid’s key men delivered.
Federico Valverde cut the ball back for Tchouaméni to score on 16 minutes. Thibaut Courtois then produced a superb stop from a powerful effort at his near post on 34 minutes, before tipping Rafa Silva’s outside-of-the-boot strike onto the bar on 68 minutes. Valverde’s pressing helped free Vinicius to finish coolly on 80 minutes for the winner.
Tchouaméni earned 8/10 for an omnipresent display on and off the ball. Vinicius took 7/10, his dribbling repeatedly unhinging the Lisbon defence. Courtois and captain Valverde also received 7/10, the Uruguayan supplying both assists.
On the Benfica side, left-back Samuel Dahl struggled and was marked at 3/10. Centre-back Tomas Araujo, rated 4/10, faltered in the build-up to the second goal. Midfielder Leandro Barreiro also received 4/10 and made way for Sidny Cabral in the 90th minute plus one.
Raul Asencio endured a difficult night for Madrid, graded 4/10 after errors in possession and battles with Andreas Schjelderup and Vangelis Pavlidis. He left on a stretcher following a collision with Eduardo Camavinga, with Franco Mastantuono replacing him on 77 minutes.
