France’s 2-0 win over Ukraine on Friday was a great result for Didier Deschamps’ men but an even more special night for Kylian Mbappe who scored for his national team in the 82nd minute to put the game to bed.

His goal on the night took him to a staggering 51 goals for the French national team and thus level with Barcelona and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

In fact, Mbappe is now the joint second-highest goalscorer for France in the history of the national team.

Olivier Giroud, on 57 goals, continues to hold the top spot but given Mbappe’s age and form, it is safe to say that it is only a matter of time before he claims the crown.

Mbappe speaks to the media

Speaking to the media after his accomplishment, the Real Madrid star opened up on how it felt to level with the national team legend in terms of goals scored.

“A round of applause for Titi (Henry)! But now I want to get over it! It’s an honour to match a player like him,” he said.

Mbappe then spoke on Henry’s legacy for France and how he is one of the greatest players to ever represent the country at the highest level.

“Everyone knows what he means to the French, and even more so to the forwards. He is someone who paved the way, and I have great respect and admiration for him,” the Real Madrid superstar said.

“Reaching this milestone so soon is crazy, but I like it. I want to move forward and, above all, win games and titles,” he added, insisting that his main goal was to win trophies.

Olivier Giroud’s record is now just around the corner, and given Mbappe’s age, it is clear that he will soon overtake the leader as well.

“The record is getting closer, but it’s not something I think about,” Mbappe said about the next milestone.

“I don’t know if it’s because I think I can overcome it or because I think there are more important things, but it’s true that being the top scorer in the history of the French national team is no small thing,” he concluded.
