Today feels like the start of a rumour which could trickle on for months and years. It’s an idea we’ve heard suggested before, not as a rumour but simply as something which might be a good idea for both parties.
As quite often happens, the “sensible transfer” idea soon gets lets of its own, and starts being reported as an actual thing. Is it just rumour writers catching on to the suggestion, or life imitating art? We don’t yet know.
The subject of the rumour is Enzo Fernandez, who is coming to the end of his second full year at Chelsea. It’s fair to say it hasn’t worked out. He’s been used by a few different managers in a few different formations, but hasn’t been able to find the role that gets the best out of him.
For the first time, the last couple of weeks have seen him properly dropped from the first team. Against Liverpool he was on the bench nominally because of post-international break fatigue. Against Newcastle the week after, he simply wasn’t selected.
When a player with a name and a price tag that big starts getting left out, the transfer rumour mills fire up. And in this case they’re suggesting a really sensational swap – Enzo to Real Madrid, with Aurelien Tchouameni coming in return.
That’s what Fichajes report today. We certainly see Enzo thriving more at Madrid than at Chelsea. The style of the team and the league suit him more. While Tchouameni might find the opposite. He’s not having a great season in Spain.
But we’re always sceptical of deals this big – especially when they’re swaps.
Keep an eye on this though, if Enzo and his opposite number keep struggling, perhaps this does become a reality.
