Real Madrid are anxiously monitoring Kylian Mbappe’s fitness after the forward suffered a minor right ankle sprain during the weekend clash with Villarreal, Marca reports.

The France international was on the score sheet over the weekend, bagging Madrid’s third goal in the 3-1 victory at Santiago Bernabeu.

The French captain has since joined the national team at Clairefontaine but remains in the gym alongside Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, who is nursing a problem with his quadriceps.

Mbappe is undergoing a special recovery session under the joint supervision of France’s medical staff and Madrid’s club doctors.

The French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed that treatment will continue through Tuesday, with an update on the striker’s progress expected later in the evening.

Mbappe’s condition is being treated with caution at the moment. He sat out France’s first full training session on Monday and instead focused on physiotherapy and light gym work.

Les Bleus are gearing up for October’s World Cup qualifiers, taking on Azerbaijan on Friday and Iceland next Monday. France head coach Didier Deschamps is optimistic that Mbappe will be ready in time.

During his press conference, Deschamps told reporters that Mbappe had a “minor discomfort that isn’t serious” and reassured that his inclusion in the team means he’s confident he’ll recover in time.

While France’s medical team exudes calm, the atmosphere in Madrid is less relaxed.

The Spanish giants are sweating over the condition of their top goalscorer, knowing the slightest aggravation could keep him out of some of the big games coming after the international break.

Madrid visit mid-table Getafe after the international break. They then host Juventus in the Champions League before welcoming Barcelona to the Bernabeu for the first El Clasico of the season.

Losing Mbappe would be a nightmare for Los Blancos as they look to reclaim the La Liga title from Barca this season.

Mbappe has scored 15 goals in 13 games across all competitions this season and is the top scorer in La Liga, scoring nine times in eight appearances.
