The 30-year-old midfielder will have the operation, unlike William Saliba, who also has a back problem.

For the Spain international, the hope is that the absence does not hinder a prospective transfer. He has expressed interest in joining Real Madrid this summer, while the club, initially not keen, is now said to be open to his arrival.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner's Manchester City contract runs until next summer, which could ease a departure. He has 70 caps and four goals for Spain.
