Real Madrid have been linked with Sunderland defender Trai Hume this summer, with Defensa Central reporting he is among right-sided options being assessed as low-cost cover and competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The report says Madrid are exploring the market after the expected departure of long-serving Dani Carvajal, prioritising a rotation option over a major outlay. Hume is mentioned alongside Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read, Brighton’s Matt Wieffer and Monaco’s Vanderson. It adds that Hume could be available for about €22 million, roughly £19 million.
The prospect appears unlikely for now, but it underlines how Hume’s standing has grown after another excellent season for Sunderland. The Northern Ireland international has been a mainstay under Régis Le Bris, valued for versatility, intensity and reliability.
Hume came through Ballymena United and Linfield, making his Linfield senior debut in April 2019. He then joined hometown club Ballymena on loan, playing 37 times and scoring six goals, before returning to become Linfield’s first-choice right-back.
Sunderland signed him in January 2022 on a four-and-a-half-year contract. He debuted a month later in a 2-1 defeat at Cheltenham Town and established himself as a regular during the 2022-23 campaign.
He agreed a contract extension in 2023, then signed a long-term deal after Sunderland’s promotion to the Premier League, keeping him at the club until summer 2030. Hume also netted his first Premier League goal earlier this season in a 4-3 loss to Aston Villa.
