Florentino Perez has no doubts that Jose Mourinho is the right candidate to lead Real Madrid forward at a time when the club is clearly in a deep internal crisis.
The manager’s experience and track record over the years, after all, command respect from every player in the dressing room and can thus keep the squad in check.
Perez’s decision to call for elections and the approval of Enrique Riquelme’s candidacy, however, throws the club’s administrative future into a grey area – one that is directly affecting Mourinho’s appointment.
As relayed by Record Portugal in a recent update, Real Madrid were planning on announcing Jose Mourinho’s appointment as the new manager on Monday, immediately after the final league match day and the official end of the 2025-26 season.

Now, however, matters have changed because of Riquelme’s presidential candidacy and the sudden call for the first election since 2006.
Given the uncertainty and the chance that the election can swing either way, no official announcement will now be made until the elections are over and Perez is reinstated as the club president.
Yesterday, Real Madrid’s Election Board officially confirmed that elections will take place this year as Perez’s presidency is being challenged after two decades.
There is, however, a hurry to get matters closed given that much of the planning for next season is dependent on the same.

Two dates stand out as potential options for the polling – May 31st and June 7th, both of which are Sundays.
The difference between the two is the amount of time the candidates get for their electoral campaigns.
While the former option will see the club’s future decided quicker, the latter hands Riquelme sufficient time to make a case for himself.
In either case, Mourinho’s appointment can be expected in two weeks, even in the worst-case scenario.
