Real Madrid will open proceedings to expel a club member who was ejected from the Santiago Bernabéu for making a banned salute during the Champions League meeting with Benfica.

The club said in a statement that it will seek to end the supporter’s membership and affiliation after the 2-1 win, stressing zero tolerance for such behaviour.

The incident happened before kick-off, with television cameras capturing the member in the Grada Fan section performing the salute. He was then escorted from the stadium as a preventive measure.

Real Madrid added that gestures and expressions of this kind incite violence and hatred in sport and society, and confirmed an internal process would begin.

Benfica’s European campaign ended on Wednesday, 25 February, after elimination in the Champions League playoff. They now focus on Liga Portugal Betclic as their only route to the 2026/27 Champions League, with Gil Vicente next in the 24th round.
