David Alaba’s future at Real Madrid continues to be a matter of debate inside the club.

In fact, according to a report from The Athletic, the Austrian defender has no intention of leaving early and remains determined to complete his contract, which runs until 2026.

However, within the club, there is little optimism that the 33-year-old can return to the level that once made him a cornerstone of the defence.

Alaba has endured a difficult period since his serious ACL injury, with setbacks and relapses preventing him from playing regularly for nearly two years.

While he has shown determination in his recovery, Madrid officials believe the constant physical problems have taken a toll and lowered his long-term prospects.

Shrinking role under Alonso

The defender’s situation is complicated further by the strength of alternatives in the squad. Real Madrid have invested heavily in younger, more durable centre-backs, leaving Alaba facing a reduced role under new coach Xabi Alonso.

Sources close to Alaba insist he enjoys a strong relationship with Alonso, having worked with him previously at Bayern Munich.

Furthermore, he has also been an important figure in helping the coach settle back into Madrid. However, goodwill off the pitch may not be enough to change the reality of his role on it.

Contract weight and board’s doubts

Another sticking point is the financial side. Alaba is one of the club’s highest earners, a contract that Florentino Perez and the board now view as disproportionate to his contribution on the pitch.

At 33 and with fitness doubts, his value to the team has clearly diminished, which makes the size of his contract a concern for the hierarchy.

Despite this, Alaba is firm in his decision. He believes he still has more to offer and wants to fulfil his deal until 2026.

For now, the defender remains part of Alonso’s plans, albeit in a secondary role. What is clear is that Real Madrid are planning for the future without expecting the Austrian to regain his old form, even if he is set on staying until the very end.
