Mateus Fernandes was one of the many midfield targets Real Madrid considered this summer in their bid to give the department a fresh lease of life.
After all, they struggled in midfield last season, especially in a creative sense, and it has become the administration’s objective to improve that in the summer.
Earlier today, however, it came to light that Tottenham Hotspur have made a massive move for the Premier League midfielder, with their official bid reportedly close to the €100 million mark.
At this point, needless to say, it appears set that the player will join Spurs and that his potential move to Real Madrid is off the table.
As reported by Mario Cortegana now, Fernandes was indeed admired by Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho and was genuinely a target for Los Blancos.

The club, however, had a clear idea of the investment they were ready to make for him.
Real Madrid, in that sense, were not even remotely close to the €100 million that Tottenham have splashed on him, nor would they have even come close to that figure if given another chance.
There will, thus, be no sense of regret for having missed out on the Premier League midfielder given that he eventually went for a sum far beyond their allocated funds. Instead, Perez and Co. will now look to prioritise other targets.
Slowly but surely, Real Madrid are seeing midfield options drop out of the transfer market and it is high time the club began serious negotiations and target profiling.
Nico Paz, who was initially a serious candidate to return, has now committed next season to Como while Fernandes is also no longer an option.

Enzo Fernandez, at this point, is Real Madrid’s top target but Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is reportedly counting on the player and will not make his departure easy.
Further, Los Blancos have not even begun negotiations with Chelsea for their rumoured ‘top target’ and it is clear that a move must be made soon. T
he current focus is on player sales, and all signs point to Real Madrid returning on the offensive to make signings after a big sale.
